WritingTools is a free, open-source app that brings Apple Intelligence-style writing tools to Windows, Linux and macOS: select text anywhere, press a hotkey, and an AI popup proofreads, rewrites or summarises it. It has around 2,500 GitHub stars.
Writing Tools works system-wide, in any application, rather than inside one editor. Its built-in actions fix grammar, rewrite text to your instructions and summarise content from webpages, YouTube videos and documents in a click. You can also add your own buttons with custom prompts, which turns the popup into a personal toolbox for translation, tone changes, code explanations and more. As the author puts it, it aims to be a better version of Apple Intelligence’s Writing Tools, available on every desktop platform. It can run on the free Gemini API, other cloud models, or fully local LLMs, so private text never has to leave your machine. A native Swift port covers macOS, and installers and build instructions are provided in the repository. The project is actively developed, with updates in 2026.
WritingTools is free and open source under the GPL-3.0 license. Using the free Gemini API tier or a local model makes it completely free to run.
Writers, students, support staff and non-native English speakers who want AI writing help everywhere they type, not just in one app.
