WebCodex is an open-source, self-hosted runtime that gives cloud AI agents a real development environment on your own machines. Released under the Apache-2.0 license with more than 2,300 GitHub stars and active development in 2026, it bridges the gap between hosted AI assistants and the repositories and tools that only exist on your hardware.
Cloud agents such as ChatGPT and Claude are capable, but they cannot touch the checkout on your workstation or the build server in your office. WebCodex splits into a Server that authenticates and routes requests, and a Runner installed on the machine that owns the repository. Connect an MCP client, and the assistant can inspect the repo, edit code, run tests, use Git and investigate failures in place โ no need to move the project into a hosted workspace. The same setup scales from one computer to several, so a single assistant can work across your laptop, a home server and a CI box.
WebCodex is free and open source under the Apache-2.0 license; you use it with your existing AI subscriptions or API keys.
WebCodex is for developers who love cloud AI agents but keep code on local or private machines โ anyone who wants ChatGPT or Claude to actually run the tests instead of only suggesting commands.
