Vibing Steampunk (vsp) is an open-source bridge between SAP’s ABAP Development Tools (ADT) and the Model Context Protocol (MCP), hosted on GitHub with about 510 stars under the MIT license and active development in 2026. It gives Claude and other AI assistants deep access to SAP systems so ABAP development can be driven in natural language.

Overview

Through the MCP bridge, an AI assistant can read and write ABAP code, debug, deploy, and run tests against any system with ADT enabled, from release 7.50 upwards; a built-in compatibility command reports which surface each system offers, since features such as RAP need S/4HANA and AMDP needs HANA. The tool goes unusually deep: it reads the MIME repository byte-exactly, decodes cluster tables such as BALDAT, INDX, and STXL that previously only ABAP’s IMPORT statement could read, and can explain an ST22 short dump with the context logged around it. Nothing needs to be installed on the SAP server.

Interaction happens either conversationally, through natural language in an MCP-capable assistant, or through a DSL when a workflow needs to be automated and repeated. The bridge works entirely over plain ADT, and its author documents unusual low-level details, such as SAP’s LZH and LZC cluster compression being decompressed in Go, so behaviors that normally require logging into the SAP system can be inspected from the assistant.

Key Features

  • ADT-to-MCP bridge for Claude and other MCP-capable assistants
  • Read, write, debug, deploy, and test ABAP through natural language
  • Works with ADT-enabled systems from ABAP 7.50 upwards
  • Byte-exact reading of the MIME repository (SMW0 content)
  • Decodes cluster tables and explains ST22 dumps with full context
  • No components to install on the SAP server side

Vibing Steampunk is free and open source under the MIT license. You use it with your own AI assistant subscription or API access and your own SAP systems.

Who Is It For

It is aimed squarely at ABAP developers and SAP technical teams who want AI-assisted (“vibe coding”) development inside established SAP landscapes, including older ERP systems where modern tooling rarely reaches.
