The Terraform MCP Server is HashiCorp’s official Model Context Protocol server for the Terraform ecosystem. It gives AI assistants and agents structured access to the Terraform Registry and HCP Terraform, so they can look up providers and modules, check versions and documentation, and help generate correct infrastructure-as-code instead of guessing at resource schemas. It is an open-source project on GitHub with around 1,600 stars, actively developed in 2026.
Language models frequently hallucinate Terraform arguments because provider schemas change constantly. By connecting an MCP client to this server, an assistant can query the live Registry for provider and module documentation, search for the right building blocks, and – with authentication – inspect workspaces and runs in HCP Terraform or Terraform Enterprise. That grounding makes AI-generated infrastructure code far more reliable, and keeps the human in the standard Terraform workflow of plan and apply rather than letting an agent act unsupervised.
The Terraform MCP Server is free and open source under the MPL-2.0 license. Registry access is free; HCP Terraform features follow your existing Terraform plan.
