spaCy is an industrial-strength natural language processing library for Python with 33,900+ stars on GitHub, built by Explosion for real production workloads.
spaCy is what you reach for when NLP has to ship. It provides fast, accurate tokenization, named entity recognition, part-of-speech tagging, dependency parsing, entity linking and text classification, with trained pipelines for dozens of languages. Where research frameworks optimize for flexibility, spaCy optimizes for speed and reliability: it is written in Cython, processes text in large batches efficiently, and exposes a clean, consistent API that behaves the same in a notebook and in production. A mature ecosystem surrounds it — rule-based matching, custom pipeline components, training tooling and integrations with transformers when you need them. Maintained continuously since 2015 and updated in October 2026, spaCy remains a default building block of applied NLP.
Longevity is one of its strongest credentials: spaCy has survived several hype cycles because it solves unglamorous problems — fast, predictable text processing — extremely well, and its documentation and university-style course materials are widely considered the best introduction to practical NLP. It anchors production systems in media monitoring, legal tech, finance and healthcare, and its rule-based components remain the pragmatic choice when a problem needs precision rather than a neural guess. For teams standardizing on one NLP toolkit that will still be maintained in five years, spaCy is usually the shortlist of one.
spaCy is free and open source under the MIT license. (Explosion’s separate annotation tool, Prodigy, is a paid product, but spaCy itself costs nothing.)
