Philips Hue is the benchmark for smart lighting: premium bulbs, light strips and fixtures in millions of colors, controlled by the most polished lighting app available.
Hue, from Signify, is the system most other smart lights are measured against. A Hue Bridge connects up to dozens of bulbs, strips, lamps and outdoor lights over Zigbee, enabling whole-home scenes, schedules and automations that keep working even if the internet drops. Hue lights sync with music, movies and games through Hue Sync, respond to every major voice assistant, and support Matter over the bridge. The range spans simple white bulbs to gradient light strips, ceiling fixtures and garden lighting.
Hue is also one of the safest long-term bets in smart lighting: the Bridge has received years of software updates, bulbs bought a decade ago still work, and the second-hand market is huge. A newer Bridge Pro model raises capacity for very large installs and adds motion-aware features that let lights react without separate sensors in some rooms.
Hue is premium-priced hardware with no subscription. Individual bulbs start around $15 for white and about $50 for color; starter kits with a Bridge begin around $70-$200 depending on bulb count. Light strips, fixtures and outdoor lights range from about $30 to $300+. The Hue app and core automations are free.
Anyone building a serious smart lighting setup who values reliability, color quality and ecosystem support β and is willing to pay a premium over budget bulb brands.
