InstantStyle is an open-source technique from the InstantX team for style-preserving text-to-image generation: give it one reference image and a prompt, and it generates new content in the reference’s visual style without any fine-tuning. The authors describe it as a “free lunch” for style transfer in diffusion models, built from two simple ideas: separating style and content features in the CLIP image encoder, and injecting style features only into style-specific attention blocks. The repository has around 2,000 GitHub stars, and the code was last updated in 2024.
Style leakage is the classic failure of image-prompt adapters: ask for a watercolor style and the reference’s subject sneaks into your output. InstantStyle tackles this by subtracting the content features from the style features and by confining style injection to the down and up blocks of the UNet that govern style, which together preserve the prompt’s content while faithfully carrying color, texture, material and mood. It works with Stable Diffusion XL pipelines and IP-Adapter weights, and the repo includes inference scripts plus a Hugging Face demo.
Free. The research code is openly released on GitHub; run it locally with your own GPU and freely available base-model weights.
Designers, illustrators and diffusion-model researchers who want consistent branded or artistic styles across generated images without the cost of training a LoRA for every style.
InstantStyle has been widely adopted inside ComfyUI and Diffusers workflows, where it is often combined with ControlNet: InstantStyle supplies the look while ControlNet locks the composition. The authors also released follow-up work and integrations through the InstantX project, and the method’s two tricks are simple enough that many community implementations exist for other backbones, making it one of the most reused style-conditioning recipes in the SDXL ecosystem.
