GPT-2 Simple is a free, open-source Python package that makes it easy to fine-tune OpenAI’s GPT-2 text-generation model on your own text. Created by Max Woolf (minimaxir), it wraps the original TensorFlow model in a friendly API: load a pre-trained checkpoint, fine-tune on anything from tweets to screenplays, and generate new text in the same style โ all in a few lines of code, ideally in a free Colab notebook.
GPT-2 Simple is an open-source project on GitHub with about 3,400 stars. Released when GPT-2 was state of the art, it became one of the most popular ways for non-experts to experiment with neural text generation, spawning countless creative projects โ bot accounts, story generators, fake reviews and more. The package handles downloading the 124M, 355M, 774M and 1.5B checkpoints, tokenising your dataset, running fine-tuning with sensible defaults, and sampling from the result with temperature and top-k controls. While the ecosystem has moved on to much larger models, GPT-2 Simple remains a lightweight, well-documented way to teach the core mechanics of fine-tuning language models.
GPT-2 Simple is completely free and open source. You run it on your own hardware or in free notebook environments; there are no fees or paid tiers.
GPT-2 Simple is for creators, students and developers who want a gentle, hands-on introduction to fine-tuning language models, or a quick way to generate stylised text with a small local model.
