The GitHub MCP Server is GitHub’s official Model Context Protocol server, with 33,800+ stars on GitHub, connecting AI assistants directly to the GitHub platform.

Overview

AI coding tools are far more useful when they can see your actual projects. The GitHub MCP Server gives MCP-compatible assistants and agents — Copilot included — structured access to repositories, issues, pull requests, Actions workflows and security findings, so an assistant can triage bugs, review changes, inspect a failing build or summarize team activity without you copy-pasting context. It runs locally (via Docker or a binary) and GitHub also offers a hosted remote version, and toolsets can be scoped so you only expose the capabilities you want. As the reference implementation from GitHub itself, it defines how agents should talk to the world’s largest code platform. The project is MIT licensed and under active development, with updates in October 2026.

It also serves as the reference implementation for the Model Context Protocol in a large production system: scoped toolsets, careful permission mapping to GitHub’s own tokens, and both stdio and HTTP transports show how MCP is meant to work at scale. Repository maintainers use it to let assistants draft release notes from merged pull requests, support teams use it to search issues across an organization, and security teams use it to have an agent explain and prioritize Dependabot alerts. As more assistants become MCP clients, this server is how they reach GitHub.

Key Features

  • Repository management – browse and query code, search files and understand project structure.
  • Issue and PR automation – create, update and triage issues and pull requests from your assistant.
  • CI/CD intelligence – monitor Actions runs, analyze build failures and manage releases.
  • Code analysis – surface code-scanning results and Dependabot alerts to your agent.
  • Team collaboration – access discussions, notifications and project boards.
  • Local or remote – self-host with Docker, or use GitHub’s hosted remote MCP server.

💳 Pricing

The GitHub MCP Server is free and open source under the MIT license. It uses your normal GitHub account access and permissions.
