Dream Textures is an open-source add-on that builds Stable Diffusion image generation directly into Blender. From a panel inside Blender you can generate textures and artwork from text prompts, edit renders with inpainting, and upscale images — without round-tripping files to a separate AI tool. The project has about 8,200 stars on GitHub and remains in active development in 2026.
The add-on runs Stable Diffusion locally through your GPU (including Apple Silicon) and integrates generation into the Blender workflow: create a seamless texture for a material, generate a backdrop, or use the render itself as the starting point. It supports generating textures with matching depth information for displacement, inpainting parts of a render to fix or extend it, AI upscaling, and using generated images as references for scene work. Because the diffusion model runs on your own machine, generations are free and unlimited once installed. The add-on places its controls in Blender’s image editor and shader workflows, so generated images land directly as image textures you can plug into materials, and it can create the matching depth and normal-style passes that make a flat image behave like a real surface. It also keeps a history of generations inside the session, making it easy to iterate on a prompt until the texture fits the scene, and supports popular Stable Diffusion checkpoints that users supply themselves.
Dream Textures is free and open source under the GPL-3.0 license. It requires Blender, which is also free.
Dream Textures is for Blender artists and 3D hobbyists who want AI-generated textures and quick concept imagery inside their normal 3D workflow rather than in a separate application.
