DevSpace is an open-source coding agent harness that brings a Codex-style workflow to ChatGPT and other AI assistants. It is a self-hosted MCP server that gives an assistant a secure connection to your own machine, so it can read, edit, search and run code in your real local projects instead of working on uploaded copies. The project is developed on GitHub, where it has earned more than 5,200 stars, and it was still actively updated in 2026.
Instead of pasting files into a chat window, you run DevSpace locally, expose it through a tunnel you control, and approve the connection with a password only you have. The same MCP endpoint serves current protocol clients and automatically supports older clients through stateless compatibility handling, so there is no protocol mode to configure. Its description also lists support for working alongside assistants such as Claude, Hermes, Grok Bot and OpenClaw, making it a bridge between hosted AI chat products and a developer’s real terminal, tools and file system, with nothing uploaded to a third party.
DevSpace is free and open source under the MIT license. You run it on your own machine with Node.js, and any costs belong to the AI services you connect it to.
DevSpace is for developers who like the ChatGPT or Claude chat experience but want the assistant to work directly on local code. It suits solo builders and small teams who care about keeping source code on their own hardware while still getting agentic help with editing, searching and running projects.
