Devika is an open-source agentic AI software engineer, created as an open alternative to Devin by Cognition AI. Give it a high-level objective in a chat interface and it breaks the job down into steps, researches the relevant information on the web, and writes the code to complete it. The project has earned about 19,500 stars on GitHub, and its maintainers describe it as an early, experimental project whose successor iteration, Opcode, is in the works.
Devika combines large language models with planning and reasoning algorithms, contextual keyword extraction and built-in web browsing. It supports a wide range of model backends, including Claude 3, GPT-4, Gemini, Mistral and Groq, as well as local models served through Ollama, and it can generate code in multiple programming languages. Work is organized into projects, the agent’s state is tracked and visualized as it goes, and the architecture is extensible so new capabilities can be plugged in. It runs as a Python backend with a web UI, installable from source or with Docker.
Devika is completely free and open source under the MIT license. You run it yourself and only pay for any third-party model APIs you choose to connect.
Devika is for developers and experimenters who want a self-hosted, Devin-style autonomous coding agent they can inspect, extend and run against the model provider of their choice.
