DeepFace is a lightweight Python library for face recognition and facial attribute analysis. It wraps a portfolio of state-of-the-art models, including VGG-Face, FaceNet, ArcFace, DeepID, OpenFace and SFace, behind a few one-line functions: verify whether two photos show the same person, find a face in a database, extract embeddings, or analyze attributes such as age, gender, emotion and race. It has about 23,600 stars on GitHub and is the most popular open-source face analysis library for Python.

Overview

A production face recognition pipeline has five stages: detection, alignment, normalization, representation and verification. DeepFace handles all of them in the background, with a choice of detector backends such as OpenCV, RetinaFace, MTCNN, YOLO and MediaPipe, so results benefit from good detection and alignment without the user managing each step. Beyond basic verification, the library supports database-backed recognition with backends ranging from Postgres and MongoDB to vector databases like Pinecone, Qdrant and Milvus, approximate nearest neighbor search for scale, real-time video analysis through a webcam stream, face anti-spoofing checks, and embedding extraction for custom pipelines. Published benchmarks in the repository compare the wrapped models’ accuracy, and a managed API is available through deepface.dev for teams that prefer not to run the stack themselves.

Key Features

  • Face verification, recognition and embedding extraction with one-line function calls
  • Facial attribute analysis for age, gender, emotion and race
  • Portfolio of leading models: VGG-Face, FaceNet, ArcFace, DeepID, SFace, GhostFaceNet and more
  • Many detector backends, including RetinaFace, MTCNN, YOLO and MediaPipe
  • Database-backed recognition with SQL, NoSQL and vector database support, plus ANN search
  • Real-time stream analysis and face anti-spoofing detection

๐Ÿ’ณ Pricing

The DeepFace library is free and open source under the MIT license, installable from PyPI. A managed cloud API via deepface.dev is offered for users who prefer not to install or operate infrastructure, making the overall offering freemium.

Who Is It For

DeepFace is for developers and researchers who need face recognition or facial attribute analysis in Python without building a pipeline from scratch, from identity verification and photo organization to emotion analysis and security applications.
