Copilot for Xcode is an open-source extension that brings AI coding assistance into Apple’s Xcode IDE — it was the first tool to connect GitHub Copilot, Codeium and ChatGPT to Xcode, and it has since grown into a flexible AI layer for Apple-platform developers. The project has about 8,200 stars on GitHub and is actively developed in 2026.

Overview

The tool combines an Xcode source editor extension with a companion app. Through them you get Copilot-style inline code suggestions as you type, a chat panel that understands your open files, and the ability to run AI commands on selected code — explaining, refactoring or generating documentation. It is backend-agnostic: connect GitHub Copilot, Codeium, OpenAI’s API or other supported services, and define custom commands and prompts tailored to your team’s conventions. For Apple developers who otherwise have no official Copilot integration in Xcode, it fills a long-standing gap. The extension supports OpenAI-compatible APIs as well, so teams can point it at other hosted or self-hosted models, and its prompt library can be shared across a team to standardize how common tasks — writing tests, adding documentation, converting code between Swift paradigms — are phrased. Setup involves a one-time macOS permission grant so the extension can communicate with Xcode, after which assistance appears directly in the editor where Apple-platform developers already spend their day.

Key Features

  • GitHub Copilot and Codeium code completions inside Xcode
  • Chat interface with context from your open files and selections

💳 Pricing

Copilot for Xcode itself is free and open source under the MIT license. To use it you connect your own GitHub Copilot, Codeium or OpenAI account, which may carry its own subscription cost.

Who Is It For

Copilot for Xcode is for iOS and macOS developers who want modern AI pair-programming features — completions, chat and code actions — without leaving Xcode.

Note: This is the third-party Copilot for Xcode by Intitni, not GitHub’s official extension; GitHub’s own version is listed separately as GitHub Copilot for Xcode.
