Call Center AI is a Microsoft open-source sample that lets an AI agent make and receive real phone calls. Trigger an outbound call with one API call — or let customers dial the bot directly — and the agent holds a natural spoken conversation powered by Azure OpenAI. The project has about 6,700 stars on GitHub and was updated in 2026.
The system combines Azure Communication Services for telephony with Azure OpenAI’s realtime speech capabilities: callers hear a low-latency voice, can interrupt naturally, and talk to an agent whose persona, goals and knowledge are defined in configuration and prompts. Typical scenarios are appointment reminders and confirmations, customer satisfaction surveys, lead qualification, payment reminders and first-line support triage. The agent can be given tools and context for the specific call — for example the customer’s booking details — and conversations are logged with transcripts and recordings for review and quality control. As a Microsoft sample, the repository includes infrastructure-as-code deployment to Azure, configuration for phone number provisioning, and guidance on tuning the bot’s voice behavior. It is Apache-2.0 licensed and intended as a serious starting point for production voice-agent projects rather than a toy demo.
Call Center AI is free and open source under the Apache-2.0 license. Running it incurs standard Azure Communication Services telephony and Azure OpenAI usage charges.
Call Center AI is for developers and businesses building phone-based AI agents — reminders, surveys, qualification and support calls — who want a Microsoft-supported reference implementation on Azure.
