BrowserOS is an open-source, Chromium-based agentic browser โ a free alternative to ChatGPT Atlas, Perplexity Comet and Dia. It has more than 14,000 stars on GitHub and was actively developed in 2026.
In BrowserOS the browser itself is the agent. You describe a task in natural language and the built-in AI navigates pages, clicks, fills forms and extracts information for you, inside a full Chromium browser that also works normally for everyday browsing. Privacy is a core design goal: you can bring your own model, running locally through Ollama or LM Studio, or connect cloud models such as Claude. MCP support lets the browser reach external tools, and builds are available for Windows, macOS and Linux.
Because BrowserOS is a real Chromium fork rather than a wrapper, your extensions, bookmarks and everyday browsing carry over, and the agent works in the same environment you do โ including sites behind logins. The agent can be pointed at different models per task, and the open-source codebase means its privacy claims can be audited rather than taken on faith. It ships with tools for page interaction and data extraction built around the agent, plus MCP connectivity for wiring in external services, positioning it as the open answer to the wave of closed AI browsers from much larger companies.
BrowserOS is free and open source under the AGPL-3.0 license. With local models it costs nothing to run; cloud models are billed by their own providers.
Automation enthusiasts, researchers and everyday users who want an AI-native browser without subscription lock-in or sending their browsing to a closed platform.
