Baichuan-13B is a 13-billion-parameter large language model developed by Baichuan Intelligent Technology, released as open weights for research and commercial use. The GitHub repository has collected around 2,920 stars, and the model was a notable early entry among Chinese open LLMs, trained on roughly 1.4 trillion tokens with strong bilingual ability in Chinese and English. Both base and chat-tuned variants are published on Hugging Face.
Baichuan-13B was designed to balance capability and deployability: at 13B parameters it can run on a single high-memory consumer or workstation GPU with quantization, while still posting competitive scores on benchmarks such as C-Eval and MMLU at its release. The repository provides model code, evaluation results, and deployment guidance, and the chat version is fine-tuned for dialogue. It supports a 4,096-token context window and ALiBi positional encoding for stable length extrapolation.
At release, Baichuan-13B topped several Chinese evaluation leaderboards among open models of comparable size, and the project also published the training and evaluation details researchers need to reproduce its results. INT8 and INT4 quantized checkpoints lower the hardware bar further, and the model slots into standard inference stacks such as Hugging Face Transformers and vLLM. As an early, permissively licensed Chinese foundation model, it became a base for many downstream fine-tunes in the Chinese open-source community.
Baichuan-13B is free to download and use under its open model license (Apache-2.0 for code; the model license allows commercial use). You only pay for your own inference hardware or cloud compute.
Developers and researchers building Chinese or bilingual LLM applications who need a mid-size open model they can self-host, fine-tune, and deploy commercially.
