Alpaca Electron is an open-source desktop app published on GitHub that made chatting with Alpaca and other LLaMA-based local language models as simple as installing a program. The project has gathered around 1,300 GitHub stars.
When open LLMs first escaped in 2023, running them meant compiling C++ and living in a terminal. Alpaca Electron wrapped llama.cpp in a friendly Electron chat interface with a familiar layout, context memory and chat history: download the installer, point it at a model file, and start chatting — entirely on your own machine, on CPU, with no account and no internet connection after setup. It accepts Alpaca, Vicuna and other quantised LLaMA-family models, bundles everything the runtime needs into the installer, and also ships a Docker setup. The code was last updated in 2024 and Windows is the best-supported platform, with macOS and Linux builds provided as-is. As one of the first one-click local-LLM apps, it remains a simple, private option for experimenting with early open models on ordinary hardware.
Alpaca Electron is free and open source under the MIT license. Models are downloaded separately at no cost from their publishers.
Curious users and developers who want to chat with early open-weight models locally and privately, without any setup friction.
