HyperDB is a hyper-fast local vector database designed for use with LLM agents: embed your documents, index them in-process, and retrieve semantically similar content without running a separate database server. The open-source project has about 1,400 stars on GitHub and is installable from PyPI.
Retrieval is the memory layer of most agent and RAG applications, but dedicated vector databases can be heavy infrastructure for a local tool. HyperDB takes the embedded route: a highly optimized C++ backend with hardware-accelerated operations via Intel MKL BLAS does the vector math, while a simple Python interface keeps the developer experience light. You can index documents with ids and metadata attached, then query for nearest neighbors as part of an agent loop or a retrieval pipeline. The interface is deliberately designed to be compatible with large language model agents, so an LLM-driven system can store and recall information through straightforward calls. The project carries a playful tone — its fundraising jokes are famous — but the engineering is real, and it has been used as the retrieval backbone in a number of agent experiments. The repository was last updated in early 2025.
HyperDB is free and open source under the MIT license. There is no paid tier, cloud service, or usage fee — you install the package and run it locally wherever your agent runs.
