OpenContext is an open-source personal context store that gives AI coding agents a persistent memory across projects and sessions. Hosted on GitHub with about 1,300 stars under the MIT license and actively developed through 2026, it pairs a desktop GUI with the coding agent CLI you already use, so knowledge stops evaporating between conversations.
Every new agent session normally starts from zero: you re-explain your architecture, conventions and past decisions again and again. OpenContext captures project knowledge — decisions, snippets, references and notes — into a searchable personal store that your agent can draw on across repositories. Instead of bundling yet another agent, it reuses your existing CLI, such as Codex, Claude Code or OpenCode, and layers a desktop application, built-in Skills and tools, and MCP connectivity on top, so capturing, searching and reusing context becomes part of the normal workflow. Because it works with the agent you already pay for, there is no extra agent subscription, and your context lives locally under your control.
OpenContext is free and open source under the MIT license. You install the CLI and desktop app at no cost; the only ongoing expense is whatever subscription or API plan you already use for your underlying coding agent.
Developers who use AI coding agents daily and are tired of repeating the same project background every session, and teams that want shared, reusable project knowledge instead of context trapped in old chat threads.
