Search2AI is an open-source, self-hosted search gateway that gives AI agents and LLMs reliable web access. Hosted on GitHub with about 1,300 stars under the MIT license and actively developed through 2026, it exposes one Perplexity-compatible search API backed by many search providers, with automatic failover when one goes down.
Agents are only as good as the search behind them, and single search APIs rate-limit, time out or fail. Search2AI sits in front of providers such as Search1API, Tavily, Brave, Exa, Serper, SerpApi, Google and SearXNG and routes each request down a fallback chain, telling you in the response which provider answered and which were skipped. Every provider returns one unified schema — title, url, snippet, date — across search, news and crawl endpoints, so switching providers changes no client code. It is library-first with zero framework dependencies at the core (TypeScript and Hono), and the same code runs as an importable library, an HTTP service, or an MCP server for clients like Claude and Cursor, on Node, Cloudflare Workers, Bun or Docker. You bring your own provider keys.
Search2AI itself is free and open source under the MIT license; you pay the underlying search providers for the API keys you plug in. If you do not want to self-host, the companion Search1API service offers a hosted key with a free starter credit allowance and paid usage after that.
Developers building AI agents, RAG systems and chatbots that need dependable web search, and teams who want to swap or combine search providers without rewriting their integration each time.
