AG2 is an open-source AgentOS and programming framework for building AI agents that cooperate to solve tasks. It is the successor to the widely used AutoGen project, maintained by the AG2 community on GitHub, where it has collected more than 5,000 stars and remains in active development in 2026.
AG2 streamlines the development and research of agentic AI. It provides agents that can converse and coordinate with each other, support for many different large language models, tool use, and both autonomous and human-in-the-loop workflows, together with established multi-agent conversation patterns. As of AG2 v1.0, the protocol-driven framework is the top-level package installed as ag2, while the classic AutoGen-style API, including ConversableAgent and GroupChat, continues in the companion AG2 Classic repository. Documentation, a playground and examples are available through the project site at ag2.ai, and the framework integrates with MCP and agent-to-agent patterns for larger systems.
AG2 grew out of the AutoGen research community and continues to be developed in the open by a dynamic group of volunteer maintainers. The project maintains a Discord community, citation guidance for academic users, and extensive documentation covering agent patterns, integrations and deployment, which lowers the cost of moving from a prototype conversation to a maintained multi-agent application.
AG2 is free and open source under the Apache-2.0 license. You install it with pip and pay only for the model APIs or infrastructure you choose to run it with.
AG2 is for Python developers and researchers building agentic applications, from two-agent chats to complex multi-agent pipelines. Teams that started with AutoGen will find a maintained path forward, while newcomers get a mature, community-driven framework for experimenting with agent cooperation in production and research settings.
