ChatGPT Discord Bot is a tiny open-source Go command-line program that runs a Discord bot powered by ChatGPT: download one binary, add your tokens, and your server gets a conversational AI member. It was released in December 2022, days after ChatGPT launched, and became one of the most-copied starter bots of that wave. The GitHub repository has around 280 stars and was last updated in 2022.
The pitch is radical simplicity — run your own ChatGPT bot with a single command. Prebuilt binaries are provided for macOS (Intel and Apple silicon), Linux and Windows in both architectures; you extract the archive, fill in an env file with your Discord bot token and OpenAI credentials, optionally restrict usage to your own username so strangers cannot spend your API budget, and start the program. The bot then responds in server channels and direct messages, holding collaborative conversations where multiple users can talk to it in the same thread. There is no database, dashboard or plugin system — intentionally. As a result the code is short enough to read in one sitting, which made it a popular base for forks adding commands, personalities and moderation.
The bot keeps conversational context within a channel, so a group can brainstorm with it collectively — a social pattern that later became standard for AI bots on Discord. Many community variants with extra commands, personalities and moderation features started life as forks of this codebase, which speaks to how approachable the original design is.
The bot is completely free and open source under the MIT license. Your only cost is your own OpenAI API usage.
