OpenCluely is a free, open-source alternative to Cluely: a desktop AI assistant built to help during technical interviews, online assessments and coding practice. The GitHub project has roughly 1,100 stars and is under active development, with releases continuing into 2026.
OpenCluely runs as an invisible overlay on your screen that screen-sharing tools cannot see. During a data-structures problem, an online assessment or a competitive-programming round, you can ask for help by voice or by capturing the question with its smart image processing, and answers stream into the overlay in real time. It integrates speech recognition (Whisper) and modern models such as Gemini to understand spoken and on-screen questions, and supports multiple languages. Everything is customisable and designed to be private: it is open source, so users can inspect exactly what the app does, in contrast to closed commercial equivalents. Releases are published on GitHub for direct download.
The app is distributed through GitHub releases with builds users can download directly, and its configuration options let users tune hotkeys, models and languages. Its rapid release cadence reflects active iteration on overlay behaviour and capture quality across interview platforms.
OpenCluely is free and open source under the Apache-2.0 license. There is no subscription; depending on the models you configure, you may use your own API keys, whose charges are billed by those providers.
Students and job candidates preparing for technical interviews and online assessments who want a free, open-source practice and assistance copilot instead of a paid closed product.
