DLTK, the Deep Learning Toolkit for Medical Image Analysis, is an open-source library that gives researchers working code and reference implementations for deep learning on medical images. The project has around 1,500 stars on GitHub and has served for years as a teaching and prototyping resource in the medical imaging community.
Built on TensorFlow, DLTK provides modular building blocks for the tasks that dominate medical image analysis: segmentation of organs and lesions, classification of scans, and related volumetric processing, with example applications and a model zoo drawn from published research. Medical imaging has peculiar demands โ 3D volumes, small datasets, class imbalance, specialized preprocessing โ and DLTK’s code reflects those realities rather than treating scans like ordinary photographs. The toolkit includes data readers, augmentation, network definitions, and training and evaluation scripts that researchers can adapt to neuroimaging and other clinical imaging problems. The repository’s last updates were in 2023, so it is best viewed as a mature reference implementation and learning resource rather than an actively evolving framework; teams starting new projects today often mine it for proven patterns and baselines. Its accompanying documentation and example applications walk through complete experiments end to end, which keeps it useful in coursework and research labs even as newer frameworks appear. It is released under the Apache-2.0 license.
Free. DLTK is fully open source under the Apache-2.0 license, with no paid tier or hosted service.
