Keras OCR is a packaged, ready-to-use implementation of state-of-the-art optical character recognition for images, combining the CRAFT text detector with a Keras CRNN recognition model. The open-source project has around 1,500 stars on GitHub and was still maintained in 2025.

Overview

Many OCR codebases are research artifacts that take days to wire together; Keras OCR instead provides a slightly polished, batteries-included pipeline that detects text regions in an image and then recognizes the characters in each region. It ships with pretrained weights, so a few lines of Python are enough to extract text from photographs, scans, signage, and screenshots. Under the hood, the CRAFT detector localizes text at the character-region level, which handles curved and irregular layouts better than simple box detectors, and the CRNN recognizer reads each detected region. Beyond the default pipeline, the library exposes the underlying models and training utilities, so you can fine-tune detection or recognition on your own datasets when the pretrained models meet their limits. Released under the MIT license and built on TensorFlow/Keras, it fits naturally into Python data-processing workflows that need dependable OCR without adopting a heavyweight commercial service.

Key Features

  • Complete OCR pipeline: CRAFT text detection plus CRNN recognition
  • Pretrained models included โ€” working OCR in a few lines of Python
  • Handles irregular, rotated, and scene text better than naive box detection
  • Exposes models and training tools for fine-tuning on custom data
  • Built on Keras/TensorFlow for easy integration into Python pipelines
  • MIT-licensed and installable from PyPI

๐Ÿ’ณ Pricing

Free. Keras OCR is fully open source under the MIT license, with no paid tier or hosted version.

Who Is It For

Python developers who need practical OCR for images and scans and want a maintained package rather than assembling detection and recognition models themselves.
