GitLab MCP Server is an open-source Model Context Protocol server that gives AI assistants full access to GitLab. It exposes more than 100 tools covering projects, merge requests, issues, pipelines, wikis, branches, tags, users and more through the GitLab REST and GraphQL APIs, so tools like Claude Code, Cursor and other MCP clients can work inside your GitLab workflow instead of just your local files. The project has around 2,100 GitHub stars and is actively maintained, with updates pushed in 2026.

Overview

The server runs as a small Node.js process (distributed via npm as @zereight/mcp-gitlab) that you register in your MCP client with a GitLab personal access token. It supports both gitlab.com and self-hosted GitLab instances, can be restricted to read-only mode, and lets you scope which toolsets are enabled to keep the agent’s permissions tight. Merge request review, CI pipeline debugging and issue triage are the headline workflows: the agent can read diffs, comment on MRs, inspect failed jobs and create or update issues on your behalf.

Key Features

  • 100+ GitLab tools: projects, merge requests, issues, pipelines, wikis and more
  • Works with gitlab.com and self-managed GitLab instances
  • Read-only mode and per-toolset scoping for least-privilege agent access
  • One-command setup in Claude Code, Cursor, VS Code and other MCP clients
  • Supports stdio and HTTP transports for local or shared deployments
  • MIT-licensed and actively maintained

๐Ÿ’ณ Pricing

Free. The server is open source under the MIT license; you use it with your existing GitLab account and token.

Who Is It For

Engineering teams on GitLab who want their AI coding assistant to review merge requests, debug CI failures and manage issues directly, without copying context between tools.

The server is one of the most complete GitLab integrations in the MCP ecosystem: beyond basic CRUD it covers merge request approvals, pipeline job logs, branch protection aware operations and wiki pages, and it can run against a GitLab instance’s GraphQL API where that is more efficient. Teams commonly pair it with an MCP-capable IDE so the assistant can follow a ticket from issue creation through merge request review to a green pipeline without leaving the editor.
