DeepSpeed-MII is an open-source inference library from the DeepSpeed team that makes low-latency, high-throughput serving of large language models and other deep learning models practical on PyTorch. MII stands for Model Implementations for Inference: it wraps popular open models in optimized deployment pipelines powered by DeepSpeed-Inference, so a few lines of Python can turn a Hugging Face model into a fast persistent deployment or a gRPC serving endpoint. The project has around 2,100 GitHub stars and is still actively maintained, with the latest code pushed in 2025.
MII combines several DeepSpeed acceleration techniques: DeepFusion transformer kernels, tensor parallelism across GPUs, ZeRO-Inference weight partitioning, and blocked KV caching for long generations. Its FastGen engine adds dynamic split-fuse continuous batching, which is particularly effective for chat-style workloads where requests arrive continuously. MII supports text generation models such as Llama, Mistral, Qwen and Phi, plus diffusion and other model families exposed through its pipeline API.
Free. DeepSpeed-MII is open source under the Apache-2.0 license; you run it on your own GPU hardware or cloud instances.
ML engineers and platform teams who serve open-weight LLMs in production and want DeepSpeed’s inference optimizations without building a custom serving stack from scratch.
DeepSpeed-MII is part of the wider DeepSpeed stack, sitting alongside DeepSpeed-Inference and the FastGen engine, and it shares configuration concepts with the main DeepSpeed training library, which lowers the learning curve for teams already training with DeepSpeed. It targets the common production pattern of serving open models behind an internal API, and its benchmarks emphasize both first-token latency and sustained throughput under continuous request load rather than single-request speed alone.
