Windrecorder is a free, open-source personal memory search app for Windows, developed on GitHub where it has about 4,000 stars. In the spirit of Microsoft’s Windows Recall and Rewind, it quietly records your screen in a space-efficient way so you can later rewind and search everything you have seen.
Windrecorder captures periodic screenshots, indexes the text in them with OCR and can describe images, then lets you search your history by keyword or visual content and scrub back through a timeline of your day. It also produces activity statistics showing how your time was distributed. A key design choice is privacy: recording and indexing happen locally on your own machine, with data stored in small, compressed files rather than in a cloud account. The Streamlit-based interface makes it easy to browse recordings, manage storage and configure what gets captured. The project continues to be updated, with activity through 2026.
Windrecorder is completely free and open source under the GPL 2.0 license. There is no subscription, cloud plan or paid upgrade; everything runs on your own PC.
Windrecorder is for knowledge workers, researchers and anyone who constantly thinks “I saw that somewhere” and wants a private, searchable memory of their own screen activity.
