Mini-SGLang is a compact re-implementation of SGLang, the high-performance LLM serving system, written in a small codebase designed to demystify how modern inference engines work. It strips LLM serving down to its essential techniques so developers can read, run and learn from a complete working system. The MIT-licensed project from the SGLang team has more than 5,300 stars on GitHub and was actively developed in 2026.

Overview

Production serving systems like SGLang and vLLM are powerful but large, which makes them hard to learn from. Mini-SGLang takes the opposite approach: implement the core ideas โ€” continuous batching of requests, prefix caching with a radix tree so shared prompt prefixes are computed once, paged KV-cache management, and efficient attention execution โ€” in a codebase small enough to read end to end. It genuinely serves models: you can launch it, send OpenAI-style requests and watch the scheduling and caching machinery work, with each component kept close to its production counterpart so the lessons transfer. For engineers who maintain or extend serving infrastructure, or students who want to understand what happens between a request arriving and tokens streaming out, it serves as both a teaching tool and a starting point for experiments, and it is notable that it comes from the SGLang project itself rather than a third party.

Key Features

  • A complete, working LLM serving engine in a deliberately small codebase
  • Continuous batching for high-throughput request handling
  • Radix-tree prefix caching that reuses shared prompt computation
  • Paged KV-cache management mirroring production serving systems
  • OpenAI-style request interface for easy experimentation
  • Written and maintained by members of the SGLang project

Who Is It For

Engineers and students who want to understand LLM inference internals โ€” batching, caching and scheduling โ€” by reading and running a compact but real serving system.
