Ouroboros is an open-source Agent OS that adds a disciplined, replayable workflow layer on top of AI coding agents. Launched in 2026, it has about 6,300 stars on GitHub and is under very active development.
Ouroboros starts from a simple diagnosis: most AI coding fails at the input, not the output. Instead of letting an agent guess at a vague request, Ouroboros runs a Socratic interview that exposes hidden assumptions and reports an ambiguity score, then crystallizes the answers into an immutable Seed specification before any code is written. Execution is Seed-bound and recorded in a ledger, so runs are replayable and auditable, and results pass through a three-stage automated evaluation gate rather than a human shrug. A budgeted evolution loop then lets the agent iterate across generations while the grading criteria stay out of the success contract handed to it. The layer works across 14 runtimes โ Claude Code, Codex CLI, Gemini CLI, OpenCode, Copilot, Kiro, Goose, Antigravity, Grok, and more โ and exposes an MCP server for integration.
Ouroboros is free and open source under the MIT license. You pay only for the underlying coding-agent and model usage it orchestrates.
