Darkflow brings Darknet — the framework behind the YOLO family of object detectors — into TensorFlow. It loads trained Darknet weights, runs real-time object detection, and lets you retrain or fine-tune models with TensorFlow tooling before exporting them for deployment. The project has about 6,100 stars on GitHub and is released under the GPL 3.0 license; the codebase was last updated in 2023.

Overview

Darknet’s original YOLO implementations are fast but written in C, which makes them awkward to extend inside a Python machine-learning workflow. Darkflow re-implements the network in TensorFlow so the same weights can be loaded, inspected and trained with familiar tools. It supports the YOLO v1 and v2 weight files (including the tiny variants), can translate a trained model into a frozen constant graph definition for mobile devices, and ships with an Android demo showing on-device inference.

In its day Darkflow was one of the most starred ways to run YOLO outside the original C codebase, and it remains a compact teaching example of how a detection network maps onto a modern framework: the repository includes the full translation of the network definition, the weight-loading code and the training loops. Prospective users should note the flip side of that clarity — dependencies target TensorFlow 1.x and OpenCV 3, so running it today usually means pinning an older Python environment or container rather than installing into a current stack.

Key Features

  • Real-time object detection and classification with YOLO v1 and v2 models
  • Loads original Darknet weight files directly, including tiny variants
  • Retrain and fine-tune models using TensorFlow instead of Darknet
  • Exports frozen graph definitions suitable for mobile deployment
  • Installable with pip or built in place from source
  • Includes an Android demo of TensorFlow-based detection

💳 Pricing

Free. Darkflow is open source under the GPL 3.0 license and runs entirely on your own hardware.

Who Is It For

Computer-vision developers who want YOLO-style detection inside a TensorFlow pipeline, especially for fine-tuning or mobile export, and who are comfortable with a TensorFlow 1.x-era codebase.
