Deep Image Prior is the official open-source code release for one of the most surprising computer vision results of the deep learning era, published on GitHub with around 8,100 stars. It showed that the structure of a randomly initialized convolutional network is, by itself, a powerful prior for image restoration โ€” no training data required.

Overview

The standard recipe for image restoration is to train a network on thousands of example images. Deep Image Prior (CVPR 2018, by Dmitry Ulyanov, Andrea Vedaldi, and Victor Lempitsky) inverted that idea: fit an untrained network to a single corrupted image, and the network’s architecture resists fitting the noise while capturing the natural image structure first. With this one trick, the repository demonstrates denoising, inpainting of missing regions, super-resolution, and flash/no-flash restoration, all without any pretraining or external data. The code is written in PyTorch and organized as a set of readable notebooks and scripts, one per task, making it a popular teaching resource for understanding implicit priors in neural networks. Although the repository’s last updates were in 2023, it remains a canonical reference implementation that researchers still cite, fork, and adapt for single-image restoration experiments.

Key Features

  • Image restoration with zero training data or pretraining
  • Denoising, inpainting, and super-resolution from a single image
  • Elegant PyTorch implementation with per-task notebooks
  • Official code for the influential CVPR 2018 paper
  • Teaches the concept of architecture-as-prior hands-on
  • Lightweight codebase, easy to fork for restoration experiments

๐Ÿ’ณ Pricing

Deep Image Prior is free open-source research code available from GitHub. There is no commercial version, hosted service, or fee โ€” you run the PyTorch code on your own hardware.

Who Is It For

Deep Image Prior is for computer vision researchers, students, and curious engineers who want to understand or experiment with single-image restoration and implicit neural priors using the technique’s original, readable implementation.
