CLIP as Service, from Jina AI, packages OpenAI’s CLIP model into a scalable serving system for embedding, ranking and searching images and text in the same vector space. The open-source project has collected more than 12,800 stars on GitHub and was maintained into 2024. It is the cross-modal sibling of the popular bert-as-service pattern, designed for production neural search rather than notebook experiments.
CLIP understands images and sentences together, which makes it ideal for text-to-image search, image deduplication, zero-shot tagging and content moderation. CLIP as Service wraps that capability in a client–server architecture: clients send images or sentences and receive embeddings, ranked matches or both, over an efficient protocol. Under the hood it uses ONNX and PyTorch runtimes with support for batching, sharding and GPU serving, so a single deployment can answer queries for a whole application. You can run it locally, in Docker, or as a clustered service.
The service was designed by search engineers for search workloads: multiple CLIP model variants are supported, requests can be scaled across replicas behind a load-balancing flow, and the same deployment powers both offline indexing of large media collections and low-latency online queries. For teams building semantic media search, it removes the need to hand-roll model servers around raw CLIP checkpoints.
CLIP as Service is free and open source. You host it on your own infrastructure and pay only for compute; there is no per-query fee.
The service is aimed at developers building image search engines, media libraries, e-commerce visual search, recommendation systems or multimodal RAG pipelines who need reliable CLIP inference as a microservice rather than a research script.
