Olares is an open-source personal cloud operating system designed for always-on AI agents: it turns hardware you own — a mini PC, NAS or home server — into a private cloud that runs your agents, models and applications around the clock, under your control. It has earned more than 5,300 stars on GitHub and is actively developed, with its latest updates in 2026.
Olares is built on Kubernetes and cloud-native technology but packaged as a consumer-friendly OS. Where a public cloud keeps your data and always-on agents on someone else’s machines, Olares keeps them at home: agents can run 24/7 at the edge, close to your data, with local model serving for privacy-sensitive work and no subscription rent. The system provides the pieces a personal cloud needs — identity and access management, networking, storage, an application environment for installing self-hosted services, and agent hosting — in one coherent platform rather than a pile of Docker commands. It targets the emerging pattern of personal, always-on AI: assistants and automations that should never sleep, but also never hand your files to a third party. Olares can be installed on your own hardware, and the company also offers pre-installed devices for those who want a turnkey start.
The Olares OS is free and open source under the AGPL-3.0 license to install on your own hardware. Optional pre-installed Olares hardware is sold separately for a turnkey setup.
Olares is for privacy-conscious users, homelab enthusiasts and agent builders who want an always-on personal AI cloud at home instead of renting always-on agents from public cloud providers.
