Copilot for Xcode is GitHub’s official extension that brings the GitHub Copilot AI coding assistant into Apple’s Xcode IDE. The open-source repository has about 6,300 stars on GitHub and is actively maintained, with updates in 2026.
Apple developers historically missed out on Copilot because it lived in other editors. This extension closes the gap by integrating Copilot directly into Xcode for Swift, SwiftUI, Objective-C and other Apple-platform languages. It provides inline code completions as you type and a chat interface for asking questions, explaining code and generating implementations, all authenticated through your GitHub account. The extension itself is published as open source by GitHub, while the intelligence comes from the Copilot service, which is offered in free and paid tiers.
The project ships as a macOS application that installs and manages the Xcode editor extension, available from GitHub releases and via Homebrew, so setup takes minutes rather than manual plugin surgery. Once signed in, suggestions respect Copilot’s content policies and telemetry settings from your GitHub account, and the chat panel can reference your open files for more relevant answers. GitHub maintains the extension in the open, and its issue tracker doubles as the feedback channel for Xcode-specific Copilot behavior.
The extension is free to install, but it requires a GitHub Copilot subscription. Copilot offers a limited free tier as well as paid Pro and business plans, so Copilot for Xcode follows a freemium model overall.
Copilot for Xcode is for iOS and macOS developers who build in Xcode every day and want the same AI pair-programming assistance that developers in other editors already enjoy.
Note: This is GitHub’s official Copilot extension for Xcode. A separate third-party tool also named Copilot for Xcode (by Intitni) is listed on Tooloso under that name.
