LanceDB is a developer-friendly, open-source vector database for multimodal AI that runs embedded directly inside your application — no server to manage — while scaling to billions of vectors when you need it. Built on the Lance columnar data format, it has earned about 11,700 stars on GitHub.
Most vector databases ask you to run and operate a service. LanceDB takes the SQLite-style route instead: import the library in Python, TypeScript or Rust and your application has persistent vector search over data stored in the Lance format on local disk or object storage. That format is doing much of the work — it is a modern columnar layout designed for ML, with fast random access, zero-copy reads and dataset versioning, so your training data and your search index can live in the same managed, versioned datasets. Search itself goes beyond plain nearest neighbors: LanceDB combines vector similarity with full-text search and structured filtering for hybrid retrieval, and it handles multimodal data — text, images, video, point clouds — in one store. That makes it a natural fit for RAG, semantic and image search, recommender systems and feature storage. The project remains in rapid development through 2026, and the same engine powers a managed cloud for teams that outgrow the embedded mode.
LanceDB’s open-source database is free under the Apache-2.0 license and runs anywhere. LanceDB Cloud offers a managed, serverless deployment with paid tiers for teams that want the same engine operated for them, which makes the overall offering freemium.
LanceDB is for developers building RAG, semantic search, image search or recommendation features who want a real vector database without operating one — and for data teams who like their datasets versioned in an ML-native format.
