ImageAI is an open-source Python library that gives developers self-contained computer vision capabilities: image prediction, object detection and video analysis powered by pre-trained deep-learning models, all through a few lines of Python. The library has earned about 8,900 stars on GitHub; its most recent development activity was in 2024.
ImageAI wraps well-known vision architectures — including RetinaNet, YOLOv3 and TinyYOLOv3 for detection, and SqueezeNet, ResNet, InceptionV3 and DenseNet for classification — behind a simple API, so you do not need deep expertise in TensorFlow to use them. It supports detecting and locating objects in images and video, custom object detection for your own object types, and training custom image-prediction models on your own datasets. Because the models run locally, it works offline and on GPU or CPU, which made it a popular teaching and prototyping tool for computer vision. The detection models can locate dozens of everyday object types out of the box, and the library’s custom-training utilities walk beginners through collecting a dataset, training a model and deploying it for their own objects, such as products on a shelf or parts on a production line. It runs on the TensorFlow/Keras stack and was widely used in tutorials, coursework and hackathon projects as an accessible first step into applied computer vision.
ImageAI is completely free and open source under the MIT license.
ImageAI is for Python developers, students and hobbyists who want working object detection and image recognition in their own applications without building models from scratch.
