LLMWare is an open-source framework for building enterprise retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) applications with small, specialized models that run locally. Its philosophy is that accurate AI does not require giant cloud models: the right small model, good retrieval, and private on-device deployment can do the job sustainably. The project is actively maintained on GitHub, where it has earned close to 15,000 stars, with updates continuing into late 2026.
The framework has two pillars. The first is a catalog of more than 300 models, prepackaged in quantized, optimized formats for GGUF, ONNX, OpenVINO, and PyTorch runtimes, so they run efficiently on AI PCs, laptops, and edge hardware across Windows, Mac, and Linux, including GPU and NPU acceleration. Alongside major open model families, LLMWare ships its own fine-tuned SLIM, Bling, Dragon, and Industry-BERT models specialized for enterprise tasks like classification, extraction, and question answering. The second pillar is a complete RAG pipeline: document parsing and ingestion from many source formats, chunking, embeddings, and scalable knowledge bases that connect your content to generative models. Leading cloud models from OpenAI, Anthropic, and Google are supported too, but the default path keeps data on your own machines.
LLMWare is free and open source under the Apache 2.0 license. There are no licensing fees or hosted tiers; your costs are only your own hardware and any optional cloud model APIs you choose to plug in.
LLMWare fits enterprises, consultancies, and developers who need RAG over private documents without sending data to third-party clouds. It is especially attractive when compliance, cost control, or offline operation matters, and when small specialized models can outperform a generic giant on a focused task.
