MCP Toolbox for Databases is Google’s open-source Model Context Protocol (MCP) server that connects AI agents, IDEs and applications directly to enterprise databases. It serves two purposes at once: as a ready-to-use MCP server with prebuilt generic tools, it lets clients like Claude Code, Gemini CLI and Codex explore schemas, talk to your data and generate code with no boilerplate; and as a custom tools framework, it lets you define structured, secure database tools for production agents. The project (formerly GenAI Toolbox) has more than 16,000 stars on GitHub and is actively developed in 2026.
Point the toolbox at a database and it exposes safe, scoped tools over MCP: inspect tables, run queries and build NL2SQL experiences, while you control exactly which operations each tool may perform. It supports a wide range of systems, including Google Cloud databases such as AlloyDB, BigQuery, Cloud SQL and Spanner, plus PostgreSQL, MySQL, MongoDB, Redis, Elasticsearch, Oracle, ClickHouse and more. Official SDKs for Python, Go, Java and JavaScript/TypeScript make it straightforward to embed the toolbox in your own applications, and predefined toolsets keep configuration manageable as the number of databases grows.
MCP Toolbox for Databases is free and open source under the Apache-2.0 license. You only pay for the databases and AI services you connect it to.
MCP Toolbox is for developers and data teams who want AI agents and coding assistants to work with real databases safely, from quick schema exploration in an IDE to governed, production-grade database tools.
