PhotoPrism is an AI-powered, privacy-first photos app with 40,000+ stars on GitHub for browsing, organizing and sharing your pictures and videos — a self-hosted alternative to Google Photos.
PhotoPrism runs wherever you want it — a home server, a NAS or a cloud instance — and keeps your library under your own control. Its machine-learning pipeline automatically labels pictures, recognizes faces and people, and extracts places, so huge libraries become searchable without manual tagging: combine filters for labels, location, color, resolution, quality and many other properties to find a specific shot in seconds. It handles RAW files, Live Photos, motion photos, 360° panoramas and videos up to very high resolutions, and presents everything in a fast progressive web app that installs like a native app on phone, tablet or desktop. Caption and label generation can even be delegated to Ollama or OpenAI models. The project has been in continuous development for years and is actively maintained, with updates continuing through October 2026.
The self-hosted Community Edition is free and open source (AGPL). Optional memberships unlock extras: Essentials at €2/month and Plus from €6/month (billed annually) add satellite and vector maps, a user-management UI, premium themes and private support; fully managed hosting is also offered via PikaPods from $6.50/month.
Privacy-conscious individuals, families and photographers who want Google Photos-style AI organization for large personal libraries without handing their pictures to an advertising platform.
