LocalAI is an open-source AI engine with 49,800+ stars on GitHub that runs LLMs, vision, voice, image and video models entirely on your own hardware — a drop-in replacement for the OpenAI API that does not even require a GPU.

Overview

LocalAI exposes one OpenAI-compatible server for nearly everything a modern AI stack needs: chat completions, embeddings, image generation with Stable Diffusion, audio transcription and text-to-speech, reranking, object detection and more. Under the hood it drives local backends such as llama.cpp, so models run on consumer hardware — CPU-only machines included — while a built-in model gallery makes popular open models a one-line install. Because the API mirrors OpenAI’s, existing applications and libraries can point at your LocalAI instance unchanged, keeping prompts and data on machines you own. Beyond single-node use, LocalAI supports agents with tool calling, MCP integration and distributed, peer-to-peer inference across several machines. Created by Ettore Di Giacinto (mudler) and a large community, it is MIT-licensed and sees near-daily development, with the latest updates in October 2026.

Key Features

  • OpenAI-compatible API – a drop-in local replacement for chat, embeddings, images and audio endpoints.
  • Every modality locally – LLMs, vision models, Stable Diffusion, Whisper transcription, TTS and rerankers.
  • No GPU required – runs on ordinary CPU hardware, and accelerates when a GPU is available.
  • Model gallery – install popular open models with a single command or click.
  • Agents and MCP – tool-calling agents and Model Context Protocol support built in.
  • Distributed inference – spread models across multiple nodes with peer-to-peer networking.
  • Container ready – official Docker images and Kubernetes-friendly deployment.

💳 Pricing

LocalAI is completely free and open source under the MIT license. You run it on your own machines, so there are no API bills — only your hardware and electricity.

Who Is It For

Developers and privacy-conscious teams that want OpenAI-style APIs fully on-premises: prototyping without cloud costs, serving internal tools, or running AI in regulated and offline environments.
