Octop is an open-source, self-hosted AI assistant from Tencent Cloud with 10,000+ stars on GitHub that gives every user a personal team of specialized AI agents across web, desktop and chat apps.
Octop is built for households and small teams who want an always-on assistant without handing their data to a cloud service. A single process serves a web dashboard, a CLI, IM channels and cron automation, all sharing one control-plane database stored under your own ~/.octop/ directory. Each user gets multiple “experts” — specialized agents with their own workspace, providers and personality, including 16 MBTI persona templates — and a built-in expert library and market make good configurations reusable. A coordinator in AgentTeams mode can schedule several experts on multi-step work, while portable memory and a document knowledge base travel with each workspace, so the assistant remembers context across sessions and surfaces.
Octop is free and open source under the MIT license. You self-host it — Docker is recommended for production — and only pay for whichever LLM providers you connect to it; there is no subscription for the software itself.
Families and small teams who want a private, multi-agent AI assistant living on their own hardware, reachable from the chat apps they already use, with memory and files that never leave the house.
